Henry J. Evans

Henry John Lewis Evans was born to immigrant parents on November 29, 1891, in Hawaiʻi. His mother, Nellie Crowley Evans, was originally from Warwickshire, England, and his father, Harry Lewis Evans, was born in Wales. The family lived at 2448 Maui Street in Honolulu.

Evans enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as a private in Battery F, 9th Field Artillery. In early 1918, while stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, he contracted pneumonia and died on February 5, 1918, at the age of 26. His body was returned to Hawaiʻi, and he was buried at Oʻahu Cemetery on March 17, 1918.

Private Evans is honored on the bronze plaque outside the Waikīkī War Memorial Natatorium, commemorating the men and women from Hawaiʻi who died in World War I.
