Henderson Residence: Historic Hilo Gem

A Glimpse of Historic Hilo Homes

Nestled in the verdant landscapes of Hilo, the Walter Henderson Residence on Halaulani Place stands as a testament to the architectural charm and historical significance of the Big Island’s early 20th century. This historic home is one of the many treasures among historic Hilo homes and is steeped in the legacy of Walter Henderson, an immigrant from Scotland who left an indelible mark on the local community.

Building the Henderson Legacy

Constructed in 1925, this bungalow-style house embodies the architectural trends of its era, characterized by its gabled roof, lava rock accents, and elegant tongue-and-groove woodwork. The property sits on Halaulani Place, a prominent subdivision in Hilo’s growth during the early 20th century. Originally developed by the Hawaii Mill Company, the house became a family home for Walter Henderson and his wife, Jean.

Walter Henderson arrived in Hilo in 1923 from Ecclefechan, Scotland. Partnering with Ross Marshall, he established Marshall & Henderson, a well-regarded accounting firm that later expanded as a family business. The Henderson family, including Walter’s son and son-in-law, contributed to the firm’s lasting reputation in Hilo.

The house remained the family’s residence until 1956, reflecting decades of change and development in the Hilo community. Later owners included the Walters, a family with deep ties to Hawaii’s history through missionary work and business.

Preserving a Piece of Big Island History

The Henderson Residence is not only a reminder of the Henderson family’s contributions but also a representation of Hilo’s architectural evolution. Its thoughtful design, with a lava rock foundation and coffered ceilings, has retained much of its original character. This property is now recognized on the National Register of Historic Places, cementing its status as an essential piece of Big Island history.

For those interested in historic Hilo homes and the stories they hold, the Henderson Residence is a remarkable example of how architecture intertwines with the lives and legacies of those who call Hilo home.
