Before becoming president of the University of Hawaii, Arthur Dean taught science and military drill at the institution. During the war, he was active in the Students’ Army Training Corps (SATC), a program designed to prepare young men for military service while pursuing higher education. Dean advocated for the integration of academic and military training, believing that educated officers and soldiers would be better prepared for leadership. He helped shape the university into a center for wartime education and preparation.
