Ruth Benedict

Ruth Benedict was part of the first large group of Hawaii volunteers to join the American Red Cross Siberian Commission. She sailed from Honolulu on the Shinyo Maru in November 1918 and was assigned as a refugee worker. Ruth’s role involved aiding civilians displaced by war and revolution in Russia’s Far East. Her work helped bridge the gap between military aid and humanitarian assistance in the rapidly deteriorating conditions of Siberia
