Lieutenant S. W. Tay

Lieutenant S. W. Tay was one of Hawaii’s naval militiamen who distinguished himself during the war. Originally part of the Hawaii Naval Militia, Tay was among the select group assigned to the U.S.S. St. Louis. His performance earned him a command of his own—the converted yacht Winona, which served in the Mediterranean. Tay’s rise from territorial service to commanding a vessel abroad underscored the effectiveness of Hawaii’s training efforts and the caliber of its volunteers.
