Isadore Scharlin led the “Ball and Bat Fund,” which collected funds to send baseball equipment to American troops in France. The fund gained urgency after a ship carrying a large shipment of gear was sunk by a German submarine. Isadore’s campaign offered morale-boosting support to soldiers abroad through recreation, helping bridge the gap between home and the front lines
