Florence S. Ivers, Gertrude R. Carter, Harriett R. Macfarlane, and Grace C. Wilder formed the backbone of the comfort bag campaign, which produced thousands of care packages for soldiers in the trenches. Each bag was filled with handpicked essentials—soap, socks, puzzles, tobacco—and packed with care by volunteers, including children and Boy Scouts. Their efforts gave Hawaiian troops and allies abroad a personal reminder of home-front support.
